Marine Animals You Can Spot On Our Tour

Marine Animals You Can Spot On Our Tour

The Quack'rDuck is the perfect way to take in the popular sites of the Gold Coast while keeping the kids entertained. But it also provides the unique opportunity to discover some of our amazing and quirky sea animals that are frequently seen frolicking our waterways.

If you need help identifying the various sea species of our marine life, we have provided a short description of the most common animals sighted along our tour route.

The Broadwater

After you jump on board our bus, we'll soon pass through Main Beach and the Sheraton Mirage and Palazzo Versace Hotels. From there we enter the Broadwater after SeaWorld. The Gold Coast Broadwater is a popular marine playground for visitors and locals alike. The Broadwater extends from Southport in the south to the southern end of Moreton Bay in the north. In these waterways, you can find a myriad of activities like jet skiing, jet boats and helicopter tours and more. But this marine environment is also home to some very important marine wildlife, some of which you can get a glimpse of during our tours if you're lucky enough.

Dugongs

To some better known as sea cows or manatees, our Gold Coast Dugongs can be sighted in calm, sheltered water with an abundance of seagrass to graze on (they can eat up to 50kg of wet grass per day). This makes these gentle giants occasional visitors of the Broadwater, Wave Break Island, Marine Stadium, and Crab Island, near the sheltered shores of South Stradbroke Island and the southern points of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands. Have a look at some of the footage of Dugongs we have taken while on tour.

dolphinsDolphins

It is not rare for our passengers to spot a pod of dolphins frolicking about in the warm water alongside our bus. The Gold Coast waterways are home to four different species: The Australian humpback, Indo-pacific Bottlenose, Common Bottlenose dolphins and Short-beaked common dolphins. Many of which can be seen all year round.

Dolphins are most active at the crack of dawn, between 10 am and noon and from 2 pm till dusk. We are truly privileged to have these amazing creatures coming so close to us and living in the heart of our city.

Marine turtles

We bet you didn't know that you can find 6 of all 7 species of sea turtles worldwide in the Gold Coast waters, with many residing in the Gold Coast Seaway, throughout the Broadwater and further up into the Moreton Bay Marine Park. Both Loggerhead Turtles and Green sea turtles have also been recorded nesting on Gold Coast beaches and the Eastern Beach of South Stradbroke Island. But don't get your hopes up, unfortunately, they are quite a rarity along our route.
